What does it involve?
Keeping your mouth and teeth clean prevents dental problems such as cavities, gum disease and bad breath. There are a range of things you can do yourself to improve your dental and oral hygiene. You can also book an appointment with one of our hygienists to get specialist advice.
What is plaque?
Plaque is a soft, sticky substance that builds up on your teeth and consists of bacteria. The bacteria feed on sugar from food and drink and produce an acid that attacks the teeth. Over time this causes tooth decay and gum disease. Regularly brushing your teeth will remove the bacteria and prevent this, particularly after eating or drinking sugary drinks.
What happens during an appointment?
An advanced cleaning by your hygienist will usually involve the following:
- Assess the state of your gums (BPE – Basic periodontal examination)
- Dental cleaning
- Air flow dental cleaning to remove particles and stains
- Pre antimicrobal rinse
- Application of CHX Gel *if necessary
- Detailed advice on cleaning at home, diet and fluoride
