Veneers

Is it OK to veneer healthy teeth?

Dental veneers are thin pieces of tooth-coloured porcelain that are cemented to the front surfaces of your natural teeth. They’re an easy way to address a variety of physical tooth problems such as gaps or overcrowding – but is it okay to veneer otherwise healthy teeth (ie. for purely aesthetic reasons)?

Holford Partners Curaden is a London-based dental practice whose reputation for high standards and personal attention to detail has earned them recognition as the Best Dental Practice in the UK. Their answer is a resounding ‘yes’.

The custom-made veneers are bonded to the front of your teeth, which changes the overall colour, shape, size, and length. A common misconception about veneers is that the patient’s entire tooth will need to be shaved down to a point to fit the veneer when, in fact, a minimal amount is removed from the tooth’s front surface.

Veneers can be fitted on teeth that are otherwise healthy, but have aesthetic issues like discolouring, chips, misalignment or gaps. As one can imagine, they can have beneficial effects on the patient’s confidence and self-esteem. Veneers can also be used as an alternative to orthodontic treatment (braces) when a patient would prefer to have a perfectly aligned smile in a shorter period of time.

Dental veneers can be made from porcelain, or from composite resin materials. Holford Partners Curaden’s material of choice is porcelain as it resists stains unlike composite veneers and are better at mimicking the light reflecting properties of natural teeth.

It’s worth booking a consultation with your dentist to discuss veneers further and find out the best option for you.
