What is it?
Periodontists are specialists in the supporting structures of your teeth, dealing with gum disease and dental implants. Gum disease is usually a reaction to a build up of plaque on the teeth that can lead to red, swollen or bleeding gums.
What can be done?
Good mouth hygiene, including brushing twice a day and using a mouth wash, can usually cure gum disease. A dentist or hygienist can scale and polish your teeth to remove tartar and stains and help you keep your mouth clean.
If the symptoms are acute despite good mouth hygiene you should seek treatment immediately.
Symptoms to watch out for:
- Red, swollen and bleeding gums.
- Gums that have come away from the teeth.
- Pus between the teeth and the gums.
- Persistent bad breath
- Teeth that appear loose
